On the eve of the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, we have a groundbreaking opportunity to influence one of the largest intergovernmental associations in the world to take up the cause of tackling modern slavery – and we need you to get involved.
The Commonwealth is an organisation of 52 countries around the world and is home to 2.2 billion people.[1] While a third of the world’s population are Commonwealth citizens, according to the Global Slavery Index a staggering 55% of those currently enslaved reside in Commonwealth countries.[2] Leadership within and by the Commonwealth can therefore have a massive impact on significantly reducing slavery across the world.
So how do we make this happen? In spring 2018, The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, CHOGM, will take place in the UK. At CHOGM, the 52 heads of government will decide upon the areas the Commonwealth’s official bodies will take on over the following two years. We need to act now to shape the agenda and ensure modern slavery is prioritised.
Decisions on which topics are included in the next CHOGM start long before the conference itself. Let’s mark the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery by calling for modern slavery to be included. We’re working with our partner, the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) – an international non-governmental organisation that works for the practical realisation of human rights across the Commonwealth – to do this, but we need your help too. By demonstrating the strong public support for Commonwealth action on ending modern slavery, we will have a stronger position from which to influence change.
Together, we have an opportunity to drive forward change on an international scale and encourage world leaders to join the abolitionist movement.
